7th Leg

Isopods are small crustaceans that play an important role in nature by breaking down decaying leaves, wood, and other organic matter. Often called "roly-polies" or "pill bugs," they are more closely related to shrimp and crabs than insects.

In the hobby, isopods are prized for their wide variety of colors, patterns, and behaviors. They make excellent additions to bioactive enclosures, helping to recycle waste, improve soil health, and create a thriving ecosystem. Many species are also kept as fascinating pets and display animals in their own right.

What are isopods?

A quality substrate and variety of botanicals are the foundation of a healthy isopod habitat. They provide essential nutrition, hiding places, moisture retention, and natural enrichment that encourage normal foraging and breeding behaviors.

Leaves, seed pods, bark, wood, and other natural materials help create a diverse microenvironment while supporting beneficial microorganisms that contribute to a thriving ecosystem. Whether you're keeping a display enclosure or breeding colony, a well-built substrate is key to long-term success.

Why Substrate & Botanicals Matter

Why Supplemental Foods Matter

While leaf litter and decaying wood provide the foundation of an isopod's diet, supplemental foods help ensure your colony receives the nutrients needed to thrive. A balanced diet supports healthy growth, successful molts, reproduction, and overall colony health.

Our Armor Up! food blends are carefully formulated to provide targeted nutrition, including plant-based ingredients, fungi, calcium sources, and premium proteins. Specialized blends can help support vibrant coloration, stronger exoskeletons, and optimal health while allowing keepers to tailor nutrition to the needs of different species and breeding goals.

Cristarmadillidium muricatum - Pineapple Spiky

I recently picked up some pineapple isopods from Seventh Leg at the Birch Run Reptile Show, and I couldn’t be happier with the experience. The isopods are healthy, active, and look fantastic—clearly well cared for. On top of that, the customer service was excellent. They were friendly, knowledgeable, and took the time to answer my questions and make sure I felt confident about my purchase. Overall, a great experience, and I’d definitely buy from them again. The slate food bowl they offer is also a really nice touch—well-made and perfect for keeping things clean and organized.

Shoutout to Ryan for some awesome food/dishes.

I have no idea how yall are getting such good videos and pictures, because my pods 🏃‍♂️💨💨 like hell when I open the bins. 😂 Anyway just want to share; I’ve been testing out these dishes and foods from Ryan Hubbard the past couple of months and I love them. The pods don’t lose their grip on the slate dishes, and my tarantula seems to be doing better with it too. I can also say I have certainly seen breeding and LOTS of strong babies with a mix of the protein/calcium foods (I keep everything from white sharks to powders). My springtails LOVE the fungal feast. Happy bugs 🐛
